Quote from: Slim on December 18, 2024, 04:47:08 PMThis morning I received an email from the pension fund holder saying that they had transferred the agreed sum, which they quoted, yesterday. They gave me the payment reference. I still don't understand how the annuity company can have received a smaller sum. I could understand it if it hadn't shown up in their account at all yet. But at least I do have an explicit acknowledgement of the sum that's supposed to have been transferred. I'll be a lot happier when it's done and dusted, all the same.

Had an email today confirming that the correct sum has been transferred. Bit of a relief, I was starting to think I'd been scammed or robbed.

One more private pension annuity to set up now, then I'm just waiting for the state one.

Went to pick up my M&S Xmas food order today and they'd given me a replacement item, a Turkey Crown costing £30 more than the one I'd ordered - but only charged me the original price :)

Seeing at least 5 regulars on here at the same moment between 11 and 12 AM (10 and 11 for you guys) the day before Christmas.

Just wanted to say I enjoy being on here, reading all the stories, stupid jokes, questionable music choices (including mine), Wordle games, watching bike ride photographs, commenting on sportspeople doing things I could never do (nor would I want to wrangle myself).

To all of you: have some lovely days, stuff yourself with whatever it is you feel the need to eat, get drunk, make stupid remarks during family get togethers - the kind you cannot take back and will haunt you for the rest of your days - watch Home Alone (if that's your thing), I was going to say 'enjoy the weather' but we all know that would be a mean thing to do, watch some footy (again: if that's your thing) and just enjoy yourself.

Yes I will of course be on here, as will you, but I just wanted to express some appreciation. Probably the time of the year, so don't get too soft, I'll be back to my normal grumpy self in no time.

Making my mother's shakingly written chestnut stuffing recipe, plenty of interpretation required! Something to remember her by on Christmas Day,so hope it turns out well.

I finally saw It's A Wonderful Life today at the wonderful Elland Rex.

It has a fantastically vintage organ below its screen and on entry a superb player was belting out some festive favourites.

Before the main feature there was a showing of the Laurel & Hardy silent short Big Business, accompanied by the organist who rendered the slapstick musical cues absolutely immaculately.

As for the film itself I'll post a review in the movie section. :)

Hoorah! I got to see Home Alone, again!!!!

I'll just bring things down a bit and say just take some time to remember those you won't be able to celebrate Christmas with. It's my tenth without my mum and third without my dad. My sister's kids will be having their 15th Christmas without their mum and my brother won't be seeing his four kids, well three he'll see briefly.

But my parents gave good Christmas and I am endeavouring to carry it on, my sister's kids and my brother are coming over and they will be well fed and watered. Hopefully my dad would have approved of the White and Red Burgundies I'm serving - although I'd converted him to their Californian equivalents - and the Tawny Port. He didn't care for Sauternes though, that's my touch :)

Hopefully I can manage a cheerful face and a Christmas Cracker hat for eight hours before reverting to grumpy type.

Beautiful sentiments. This is Christmas number fifteen for me and sister without mum and forty five without our dad. Poor man, he just didn't get the chance of middle let alone old age and we didn't get to know him as adults. Such a pity as our memories of him fade with the years which pass so quickly now.

I still love Christmas though and today brought one of those unexpected suddenly sobbing events whilst doing something unremarkable in the kitchen. Not a sad type of weeping at all, but more that emotion described so well by Robbie Coltrane as a delicious explosion of realisation. So many thoughts and feelings condensed into a minute or so of release of tension.

We have an extended family of aunts and cousins but thankfully I no longer care that they make little or no effort to keep in touch. It's probably quite obvious to those who read my posts on here why they don't bother. I'm gratefully stuck in a world now past but with the great fortune that I have enough hoarded away from that period to keep me going. The greatest, never to be repeated period in modern music, followed by technology of unfathomable imagination to make it even better, and companies like Fender, Korg et al make buying myself the best Christmas presents I couldn't even have dreamed of when I was young and always skint. A very happy Christmas to you all on BTW. It's a very enjoyable place to visit. Thank you.

On a cheerier note, if you're Glaswegian you always laugh quietly when you hear a wonderful choir singing A Wean In A Manger.

On Christmas Eve I made a six mile journey by car to have a night out with some close friends.

Today, after a sumptuous family Christmas dinner and snooze, the weather was mild, dry and calm so I decided to walk that six miles to pick my car up. It took 1 hour 33 minutes and I took the dog out for an hour when I got home; feel great now.  :)

Played a solo acoustic gig at the local (quite swish) Italian restaurant tonight - first set on the ground floor and second set on the first floor.

Went really well, especially as my family who were dining were given a 50% discount, I got a free beer (my first of the evening - at 10pm) and the owner and staff treated me with impeccable hospitality.

Nice way to see out the year. :)
