Gen V - A spin off show from The Boys, follows a younger group of 'supes'. It's an interesting take on the world of The Boys and like it's predecessor can be quite brutal and shocking at times.

I read that quickly and wondered why Maryland would have a centre dedicated to Prince Phillip's favourite off-roader  ;D

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Theives

If someone had insisted to me during 2023 that a film based on "D&D" - a game in which I've never had any interest whatsoever - was one of the best of the year, my immediate assumption would have been that they were pulling my leg.

However, it turns out that it really is true: this fantasy adventure comedy is wonderfully crafted in every respect, save for some of the CGI, though its slight shonkiness may well be intended.

Everything is pitched to perfection: the performances, the direction, the set-pieces, the fantastically self-aware humour that miraculously stops just short of spoof territory; this might well also be the funniest film of 2023, chock full of sharp, smart visual and verbal gags.

Effusively recommended.

Reading Matt's review I've just realised that although I mentioned a few pages back that I was watching it / had watched it, I didn't say anything else about it.

Yes - very enjoyable hokum and well worth signing up to Paramount+ for £3.49 to watch it 8).

Finished Gen V and very enjoyable it was too. Some extremely gross out moments as well, which seemed gorier than The Boys - good effects though. Nice to see a familiar face at the end. 8.5/10

Saltburn

I had high hopes for this second feature from Emerald Fennell after the quite brilliant Promising Young Woman.

It's also attracted a lot of social media chatter, particularly over a couple of "gross-out" scenes, and its 2006 setting has propelled songs it uses from that era back into the charts (Sophie Ellis-Bextor's evergreen banger Murder On The Dancefloor, for example).

Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to anywhere near all that hype.  This is over two hours of slow-burn, blackly satirical comedy horror that simply fizzles out while you wait for it to combust, as Promising Young Woman did spectacularly.

Yes, Barry Keoghan in the lead role gives another showcase of his undoubted talent and there are fine turns in support, particularly from Rosamund Pike; but for me this was ultimately a disappointing and underwhelming experience given the personnel.

Available on Amazon Prime.

Three part documentary on Channel 5 about the 1972 plane crash in the Andes. This was extremely well done. I knew the story of course, but not the details of what actually happened and how the few survived for so long and were subsequently saved. There is a movie from 1993 called Alive - but more recently a Netflix version called Society of the Snow, which I'll likely watch in the future  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt16277242/. I can definitely recommend the documentary though

Fargo se05. I've only watched the first episode so far and Fargo is back to its brilliant best (season 4 was a blip in an otherwise superb TV show). So many questions already and I can't wait to see how it pans out. Love those Minnesota accents too.
