Midnight Movie Club:

Sisu

One of the most purely entertaining films I've seen in a while.

This sees a bad-ass, taciturn Finnish soldier, self-exiled to the wilderness at the tail-end of World War Two, who crosses paths with a group of Nazis scorching the earth as they make their retreat out of Finland.

What follows is about 90 minutes of fantastic, bloody carnage, that might be summed up as Rambo-meets-Mad Max-during-WWII, but with a European arthouse sensibility.

It's also pristinely shot and looks astonishing, so I would highly recommend watching this on bluray rather than on streaming for best results.

It does get increasingly preposterous as it goes, but collects enough goodwill that it really doesn't matter - this is enormous fun and an instant cult classic.  Get the pizza and beers in and enjoy.

Infinity Pool

Brandon Cronenberg with another two hours where set-pieces of sadistically explicit violence and pornographic imagery are prioritised over a well-told story.

It may be shocking for those without strong stomachs, but it's simply tedious for anyone else, and even borders on unintentionally laughable by the latter stages.

One of 2023's turkeys and best avoided.

Just finished series 5 of Fargo. Stunning TV, it's up there with the best of US shows. Every character was acted superbly. In fact there was no bad points at all - anywhere. We'll hopefully see Munch (Moonk) again. And the guy (Joe Keery) from Stranger Things was excellent too. A 10/10 for me.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - Some of the comedy was quite good and the effects were decent too. But that's where the good ends. It has the story and script written by a 5 year old, wooden acting and really the whole thing is quite forgettable. I always think I'll enjoy these type of movies, but it's all be done before and I come away completely unfulfilled. Ho hum - 4/10
