Women's Mountain Biking today, if Evie Richards can't win then: GO PUCK PIETERSE!!!!, she's a fun girl.

But why is the BBC obsessed with Simone Biles? She's American, do the Beeb not understand what the first B in BBC stands for? But on the BBC news website front page she's the first named as being in action today.

What's strange is that the Dutch media sort of picked this up a week or 2 ago when it got out he is not staying in the Olympic village. I was not aware of this at all.

What's even more strange is the reports that this 8 years ago, he was tried and convicted, served his time and is now free. So why the preferential treatment in placing him outside the village then? Reports here say to make others feel more comfortable. Strange all together.

Wish he was. Vile Human Being.

See the Frogs managed to find their 400m Individual Medley swimmer a lane of less dense water. Blatant Cheating  >:(

Peaty petered out with a joint silver in the 100m breaststroke. Odd that the Italian won from lane 7 - hmmm.

All on his own too. You'd be daft to think in a doubles match that Dan Evans was actually there too.  ;)

Seems as if the pool isn't up to requisite standards

The locals have probably been allowed to train in the pool and the Itis are probably used to using jerry built pools sponsored by the local mafia :)

;D A shite pool is a shite pool for everyone, it seems like the pool has just been built so not much time for practice, and a good swimmer should be a good swimmer no matter the quality of the pool

This is a weird one but if you think about it, an important principle of sport and the Olympic ideal is that it's open to all. I would say though that his sentence appears, to me, to have been remarkably lenient. I assume his age at the time (19) must have been taken into account.

Just had a look on Wikipedia. The judge at Aylesbury Crown Court gave him four years, but he was transferred to the Netherlands to serve his sentence and did 13 months, which isn't much less than he'd have done in a British prison.

The judge told him "Your hopes of representing your country [as an Olympic athlete] now lie as a shattered dream" and in an address to the court on sentencing said "plainly it is a career end for him".

As it happens I found out years ago that an old friend of mine became a sex offender in 2015, for downloading child porn. He got a suspended sentence, but nonetheless the impact to his life must have been massive. I've had no contact with him at all but I've often wondered - how do you find a job? He'd been a journalist, what do you do to find work with a crime like that on your CV? How do you meet people, how can you ever make friends or start a relationship? He was separated and single last time I saw him in 2013. There's no way you can cover up something like that these days, I found out about it because he'd disappeared from Facebook and a minute of googling uncovered what had happened.

I've always assumed it must have capsized his life on every level and yet this beach volleyball player, having been convicted of a considerably more serious offence has met someone, got married and is competing at the Olympics. I suppose the excuse that he was only 19 at the time has something to do with it.

Anyway .. sorry to pull the thread down a dark path.
