Saw Sea Power last night at Rough Trade in Nottingham. They're doing a small "stripped back and signing" tour to promote their new record. Played as a four piece, without Abi (viola operator) or Phil (keyboards, cornet, occasional third guitar). The set was only about 65 minutes, tiny little venue that's a sort of annex off a bar and it was mostly the new material (with a bunch of oldies at the end).

I queued up to get my CD sleeve signed and Yan (singer / guitar player) recognised me and asked how I was doing, which made my night! Presumably I'm a familiar face from my forays down the front at gigs in recent years.

There's always a wonderful atmosphere at Sea Power gigs, a real sense of community. All four of the band present were having a drink in the bar before the set and no-one bothered them apart from one punter who politely asked Yan to sign a poster.

2020 and 2021 were the first years since probably around 1987 that I hadn't been to a ticketed gig. All my 2020 gigs have been either rescheduled at least twice or cancelled outright. I think I have 5 gigs currently going ahead in 2022, Teenage Fanclub and Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in April, the two Pearl Jam Hyde Park gigs in July, and The Black Crowes in September.

My bands have slowly been getting back to gigging too, Black Heart Angel played a handful of gigs late last year, including a very strange socially distanced one last June. I played my first pub gig of 2022 with a new band (The Remedy) last Saturday, which went really well, almost as if there'd been no pandemic; busy pub, people drinking, dancing, falling over, encores. Felt great, but also a bit uneasy at the same time - a strange sensation!

I did a little bit better than you with 1 gig in 2020 right before lockdown. Anathema at the London palladium [the band subsequently split up] and 3 gigs late last year. Fish made it to Cambridge and then Marillion twice on their tour of the UK.

Since then everything keeps getting pushed back 12 months :( Had planned to see Gojira and WASP (separately) next month but tours have postponed to 2023.

Hopefully I will get to see Anneke Van Giersbergen at the end of April.

Nothing musical coming up but got Stewart Lee 14th March and Derren Brown 11th March in Glasgow coming up both postponed for 2 years...

If money was no object (and it definitely is) I'd be off to see:

Rick Wakeman and The English Rock Ensemble (nearest is Birmingham O2 Academy on March 31)

Following my last post on T-N-M-S on Wednesday regarding your longest wait to see a band you've always liked, after just the 43 years I got to see EXTC (officially endorsed spin-off featuring Terry Chambers on drums) playing a fine set of XTC tunes at the excellent Waterloo Music Bar in Blackpool.

Since XTC stopped playing live around 82-83 (due to Andy Partridge developing stage fright 😞), then this is the first time many of the tunes had ever been played live 😎

I've an inkling the 26 song set featured a couple more tunes than when Yes toured 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' 😁

I've got:

Saucerful of Secrets in April
Steve Hackett in September
Opeth in October or November. Don't recall which now.

Nick

Porcupine tree in November at Wembley arena.

On Wednesday night I was offered a free ticket to their Shrewsbury gig, but could not make it.

I was tempted to go to that one myself - but since I wanted to do a long bike ride the next day I decided against it.

Schoolboy error - I didn't put my gig diary on TNMS anywhere for safe keeping. :-[

I've pinned a few e-tickets in my email account - Stewart Lee x 2, King's X, for example - but I'm going to have to reconstruct my list the long way round. :-\

Fishy

Stewart Lee could be the 15th actually.. still waiting on an email...
