Encanto

Another solid Disney effort that won the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2022.

It has all the usual Disney elements present and correct, but it's elevated by glorious visuals (the tale is set in a Colombian mountain village) and the impressive soundtrack is notable for the song We Don't Talk About Bruno, which has 607 million views on Disney's YouTube music channel and has entered popular culture in a similar way to Frozen's show-stopping Let It Go.

The best song for me though is the opening number The Family Madrigal, possibly the best song I've ever heard with 'Madrigal' in the title. ;)

I finally tracked down (through Vimeo of all places), the C4 documentary from a few years back (2014?) called My Granny The Escort.

This features the stories of 3, well, older ladies who do escort work. Also some chat with some of the (usually younger) men who use(d) their services.

Quite interesting 8)

Here is a brief trailer . . .

Finished the Penguin. Solid all the way through, best of the year for me.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  - I was really looking forward to this sequel to the cult-classic original. Well, in parts, it was great and all the ingredients were there but overall it just felt a little flat. Winona Ryder has always annoyed me a bit and she has a lot of the screen time. Thankfully Michael Keaton reprises the role like it was just yesterday, but stealing the show for me was Justin Theroux as the slimy boss/boyfriend. Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe were both at their best too. This movie was probably not needed except to cash in on the original and the script was mediocre at best. Still, it was nice to have a blast from the past - 6.5/10

Smile 2 - Let's face it, modern day horror movies are mostly crap. This one started really well then dragged in the middle and ended in a very strange way. The lead actress was excellent but it needed a lot more than that to make this any good. A shame as it started with much promise. Two hours+ was way too long as well 5/10

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - How many is that now? Anyway, this one takes place generations after the death of Caesar and feels like it's building up to the 60s movie - maybe, who knows as that takes place thousands of years later. CGI, animation and cinematography were brilliant and I only spotted issues a couple of times - so top marks there. The story was a bit dull though and yet again we get a movie that is stretched out way too long than what's needed to tell this story. Of course the gorillas are the bad guys, the orangutangs the saints - the rest are a mix of good (they look nice) and the bad (they look like orcs). I'd say this is the weakest of the franchise so far and I'm sure there will be more to come. In saying that I did quite enjoy it and the end is thrilling - 7/10
