Just about everything in an attempt to get to know my Focal Bathys headphones. I am trying to sort all of this without EQing either the headphones (which is possiboe but very rudimentary thourgh an app) or any of the apps I use to listen to music (Ppoeramp, Hiby Music or Mango player). All of this on my iBasso DX180 player that I am very pleased with.
So far I have found that for these headphones anything with a good midrange tonality such as piano, and especially vocals open up details hidden in the mix I never heard before. Remarkable.
Acoustic music in general sound fantasic on this thing, I tried some Wovenhand and was not disappointed.

Since I will be commuting by public transport as of the end of the year I am trying to find a good setup for that. So far I have a set of in ears wireless, wired and now this one (ANC bluetooth over ear).

Now, to continue with some David Sylvian then.

Miles Davis' Star People. Hadn't heard that one in full yet, and I love it. It's a bit experimental, even for 1983 and a continuation of his mid 70's work, but somewhat more modern. With Al Foster on drums and the fantastic guitar duo John Scofield and Mike Stern, what could go wrong?

There's always one song each year that stands out for me. 2 years ago it was Brutus, last year Spidergawd, and so far this year it's Jerry Cantrell's song Afterglow.
I am a sucker for his sort of songwriting and playing, both in AiC and as a solo artist. His output is consistently good, often exceeding that and he never fails to impress me. It always sounds familiar, he has this very defined own style especially in the vocal harmonies and chord progressions. This song though feels like the definitive Cantrell single somehow. It just feels so comfortable. And I know I often choose to listen to music that tries to pull me away from that comfort zone (to me both music and literature need to be a bit hard work, the greater the reward I always think, or it's just the - involuntary because I was only a few weeks old - Catholic baptism that rubs off), but in this case I'll gladly discard that tendency.
Anyway, that were a lot of words to say: here's Afterglow

KCs Red, elemental mixes. Weird listen, it's different from what I'm used to, obviously, but it's also very familiar. Starless comes in a well over 14 minute version with just about all tracks recorded for the song, and it's a trompet infested joy to listen to. At least for me it is. The ochestration is brought way upfront which makes the bleakness of the album dissipate completely. The bass is way up as well.
What is very obvious is that the original album was mixed to suit the performances. By that I mean Bruford and Wetton were a great tandem, but not always in sync, and you hear that quite well here, but not on the orignal mix. Fascinating listen this.
