I wonder why many buildings still have lights on? Surely the electrical systems would sustain less damage if isolated from the supply?

Large retail units that are obviously unoccupied, lit up like Xmas trees. Why are all these premises not made to isolate supply to protect the network. Surely, that would save a lot of work later replacing blown fuses, burnt-out switches etc. Just seems sensible to me.

Looks as though worst fears did not materialise. Winds of 120mph rather than 165mph and storm surge up to 7ft rather than 15ft predicted. Obviously, buildings constructed from little more than matchwood were badly damaged but Florida must be heaving a collective sigh of relief as the storm moves into the Atlantic and weakens considerably.
