When I was 14 I hid some ciggies (concealed in a cardboard Toffets carton for added security) and my paperback copy of Chopper under a loose floorboard in the spare bedroom upstairs. Eventually a new carpet got put down up there, the loose floorboard became inaccessible and I never thought I'd see them again.

Until today, when I received an email from the folks who bought my mum's house. They'd taken part of the ceiling down in the front room downstairs to install some insulation and the following fell out:

The Picnic Wasp

I've never read (heard of) Chopper but I'm thinking that for a 14 year old lad's stash to get a public airing decades later, you got off rather lightly.😁

Would you dare to light one up for old times sake?

Actually, far be it for me to grumpy all the time my day was made this week, when on taking Mrs S to New Reekie for a couple of days we found most of the overflowing litter had been removed from the streets for our arrival, then when we checked into the Hotel, our double room had been upgraded to a luxury apartment. which was nice.

Our first holiday since Covid. The last one was Tenerife back in November 2019. We still aren't up to the melee and hassle of airports (other people) just yet, so we booked a lovely cottage in rural Shropshire for a week. It's one of the few places in the UK I've not been to before. We arrived yesterday and have just got back from a lovely walk. Weather is looking a bit shit over the next few days though. My son and his girlfriend are coming down on Monday and it's my wife's big 60th on Tuesday - so something nice to celebrate.

Woke up at 0300 this morning and strolled onto the balcony of our cruise ship cabin, somewhere in the western end of the English Channel - put my specs on, looked up and had the most stunning view of a starry night I can remember since I was a kid. Light pollution obviously makes a big difference.

Oh, then you should have gone in 2020 during the good old days of the pandemic: eerily quiet airports, no queuing, check-in and security a total breeze, half-empty planes, no vaccine documentation required - because there were no vaccines...life was so hassle-free... :)

Getting a "DE&I" survey submission off my chest.  Here's an excerpt:

QuoteThe organisation essentially has a section dedicated to proclaiming successes over phantom issues that it has created by itself and for itself.  It should not feel pressured by outside forces into doing this and it should have higher expectations of its employees, who have the aptitude and intuition to work such things out astutely enough for themselves.

A cracking two-hour walk with the dog under a clear night sky, followed back at home by my first sip of alcohol in two weeks; a glorious evening all round.

All unthinkable a week ago - 'appen it's safe to say my recovery is complete. :)
