Nice site here, which will calculate sunrise / sunset times to the second for your precise location (as pinned on the map). It gives the times for a whole year.

It seems that next year's sunset times are slightly earlier than this year's.

For example sunset occurred at 15:51:20 today at my location. A year from now the sun is due to go down at 15:51:04.

Today is the absolute nadir of sunset times: at my location, the sun goes down today at 15:50:12.

Tomorrow, a second later. Friday, another five seconds of daylight in the afternoon.

This time next week, the sun sets more than a minute later than today (at 15:51:36).

Think we get to 15.47 as the earliest ..which we are already at

Wanted to see how much difference the distance east / west makes and it turns out that if I drop the pin on the map exactly 10km to the east, today's sunset time is 15:49:36 for that location.

So 1km to the east, the sunset time is 3.6 seconds earlier at this latitude. By the same token, to make the sun set a second later or earlier, you have to travel 277 metres west or east respectively.

Doesn't make much of a practical difference I know, I just thought it was interesting. But all the same it's worth knowing that on a long bike ride in the summer I could have a few more minutes of daylight in the west, and a few fewer in the east.

That's right,  I could be calling my mum in Yorkshire and she'd be saying that it had gone dark, while still light  40km to the West of Dublin.  You also see that when watching live sport or live news reports in UK.  The reverse is true in the morning of course.

So today is the last 15.47 sunset time in Ayr.. tomorrow is 15.48 and by New Year's Eve we're sitting at 15.57.. it's piss poor wet weather but still a nice feeling...

At the moment the sunset time is receding by about 14 secs a day.

That ancient wonder (built over 5200 years ago) about 20kms from me comes into its own today.  The interior chamber lights up today from the light of the Winter Solstice sunrise.  Incredible feat of engineering considering how nasty, brutish and short lives were back then.

Broke the 16.00 hrs barrier in Ayr today..16.01 sunset to be exact.. good days ahead..

Here in NW Leics the sun will set 16 mins and 20 seconds later than it did on 13th Dec (the earliest point). At the moment the sunset time is receding by roughly 1 minute, 20 seconds each day.  By the end of April it recedes by 1 minute, 44 seconds per day (then starts to slow down again).

Now broken the 16.15 barrier.. think it was yesterday actually .. today it's a 16:18 sunset👍

16:15 here yesterday, couple of weeks and it's 16:40

Definitely noticing the lengthening daylight on the commute now.
