History and importance.

During my lunch break today I took advantage of the nice weather to fit a new inner tube and two new tyres onto Boardman II. Beautiful day, sunny, light winds and easily warm enough for exposed legs so I left work early and took the new tyres (and inner tube) for a spin.

Normally I wouldn't do more than 25 or so with a new component, but I wanted to do at least 40 and I took the risk. I thought I might even do a Fondo - but probably not, since the weather looks good on Saturday as well when I'll have more time for a long ride.



I did the southbound route. Kept going south as far as Dunton Bassett. I'd usually continue on to Gilmorton from there, but since I was about to turn back I took a different turn, to go exploring a little. This took me to a village called Ashby Magna. From there, rather than turning back to come the same way, I followed a sign back to Dunton Bassett which looped me back round to the usual route after about a mile.

Really nice run out. Nice to have the old legs out again. I did take a pair of tights in my backpack and was tempted to put them on when the temperature dropped after sunset. I didn't bother. But interestingly I found myself pedalling back into warmer air, now and then. The dip between Ibstock and Ravenstone though was like being lowered into ice water.

I do think the second Boardman looks better with plain black tyres.

So: the Welsh are still in with a chance of qualifying for the World Cup, having beaten the Austrians 2-1 at Cardiff.

Italy have failed to qualify for a World Cup again, as well.

The ice patrol vessel HMS Endurance lands a detachment of twenty-two Royal Marines from Port Stanley, at Grytviken, South Georgia. They have been sent to investigate the presence of Argentine military personnel there.

When I heard about the landing craft getting hit on the news earlier, it made me wonder - if the Americans could target Russian assets with laser-guided munitions and make it look like the Ukrainians had done it, would they do that?

I don't think they've done that here though, the landing craft was a long way from NATO territory.

But there might well be "special advisers" working with the Ukrainians already on the ground, in Ukraine. It's greatly to the West's advantage to take out as much Russian hardware as possible, both militarily and politically.

Didn't think I'd get round to it so soon, but since I'd decided to go for a longish ride tomorrow rather than today I used the pleasant weather to erect my maintenance stand in the sunshine outside the garage door, attach the Planet X to it and fit a new chain.

First however, I dismantled the jockey assembly and removed the wheels to give them a good clean. Got to admit, they were gross. A bit of patience, an old rag and some GT85.

I edited the pic in. You just missed out the last step - you'd used the photo web page rather than the photo itself in the IMG tags.

For me The Camera Eye has a direction and energy that justifies what repetition there is, also it's mostly backing for a vocal that does have a direction and a momentum.

Xanadu is just so repetitive, overblown, padded out .. there's probably a decent 5 minute tune in there. Take out the overlong intro and the scale practice and you'd improve it no end.

I can think of at least one Bucks Fizz tune I enjoy more than Xanadu. Actually Olivia Newton-John's version is stronger. So is this, by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich

Another pretty quick one.

I saw them only once, 40 years ago this summer at Roundhay Park. Supported by J Geils Band, George Thorogood and Joe Jackson.

Good gig but there was no doubt the Stones were past their best even then and already people were joking about their age and supposing they'd be calling it a day soon. I don't think anyone could have imagined they'd be touring 20-odd years into the 21st century.

Mick & Keef are 80 next year.
