It's the original version on Harvest, gatefold. No poster, but according to Discogs (https://www.discogs.com/release/1133603-Pallas-The-Sentinel) only initial copies had the poster. I like the music, and these early albums have a nice 80s sound. I admit at the time Pallas passed me by and I'm hearing these LPs for the first time. Have you heard their later albums? XXV from 2011 and Wearewhoweare from 2014? Fantastic both.
No the latest Pallas album I have is the Cross and Crucible. I have the poster somewhere (nicked from my brothers album when I was a kid), I bought the new version with more songs change of order, the history of the sentinel is very interesting and worth looking up. The 80s neo prog scene is very interesting but journalist always leave out the madness of The Cardiacs though. I think Pendragon's The Jewel is simple stunning and I like some of the later Pendragon albums but The Jewel is brilliant but that line up only did one album and they never topped this album. Kowtow was a real let down for me. Yes I like the 80s sound, people criticise the sound but it is what it is. There is a near gothic sound to the early neo prog bands which I adore except the The Jewel which has this lovely happy sound. Sorry rambling I could ramble on if you like.

Yes, Pendragon's The Jewel is a tremendous album - for me Alaska tops any neo-prog song. Again their latest - Love Over Fear - is a stunning album, with some very, very good songs there.

I will, If you have never listened to them check out It bites- Once around the world. Prog meets pop, Allan holdsworth style guitar solos mixed in to level 42 hooks and melodies. They are a sort of Pop jazz fusion prog band, very pop.
More a sort of lightweight-Genesis pop-prog band, I'd say. But most of their stuff sounds pretty dated now.
Once Around The World is their masterpiece.
Yes completely, interesting I hear YES. I have a soft spot for their third album and the reincarnation with John Mitchell which is successful update.
I think this is stunning
I saw them a couple times in the late 80s at the Cambridge corn exchange which has awful acoustics and they were the only band that could get a descent sound in there.

Yes, I know It Bites well. I have Map of the Past on vinyl, and will get The Tall Ships too one day. John Mitchell is their front man these days; he of Arena, Kino, Lonely Robot and Frost* - all of which I like very much, particularly Frost*.
I'm not fond of the John Mitchell version of It Bites myself.
Was going to reply that the band is done now but apparently there was talk of a new album coming out this year.
In late 2020, Mitchell began dropping mentions of new It Bites work, including a Facebook comment on 13 December 2020 that "we're doing an It Bites album (communication permitting). We may be some time."[33] This was followed in June 2021 by an article in Prog magazine issue 120, in which Dalton blamed the mid-decade foundering of the Mitchell-era band on "a basic lack of continuity. It was stop-start, stop-start." In the same article, Mitchell stated that work on the new album was continuing (with a line-up of Mitchell, Beck and Dalton) and that a record contract had been signed, with a view to releasing the new album at the start of 2022.[34]

Somewhere I have a Power Windows picture disc, given to me by my cousin who worked for a record shop at the time. I'd forgotten about that. But I think it's the only picture disc I ever had. Once on holiday my dad was given a promotional picture disc by the camp site in Spain where we stayed that year. No idea what happened to that. I think it was a 7" single, and it had Spanish folk music on it.

I have no issues whether it's black, coloured or picture discs these days - I think the audio quality issues with picture discs are a thing of the past....but they're also nice to look at too 😂

I digress, today's vinyl was Magnum's Kingdom of Madness and a mint copy of ZZ Top's Afterburner for 7 squid (plus a remastered Tears for Fears the hurting on CD for a King's Ransom of 75 whole pennies 👍)
My own view is that vinyl died as a useful medium for new music when the CD format was introduced.

Peter Gabriel's solo stuff passed me by at the time. Except for So, which most everyone has probably owned at some some point.
That's got me thinking actually - albums that most people own. I can think of 4 off the top of my head - Brothers in Arms, Automatic for the People, Tubular bells, Dark Side of the Moon.
Nice idea for a thread; I have all those four except for Tubular Bells. Zeppelin IV sprang to mind. Maybe Abbey Road and Sergeant Pepper as well. Rumours, maybe. Thriller, perhaps.

Well I had a bit of dosh from a significant birthday a month ago, had being the operative word 😂
Took a quick peek in the local store, Rapture, today and picked up Penthouse and Pavements and The Luxury Gap by Heaven 17. These are two of my wife's favourites and I quite like both too At £6 and £8, I thought I couldn't go wrong....I could. Although it looked good the copy of The Luxury Gap is unplayable in a couple of places. The other LP is OK though.
^ Some great songs from Heaven 17. I used to like them back in the day. I might dig out Penthouse and Pavements and give a spin.

Fire Of Unknown Origin - absolute classic!
Strolling through a sweet little Shropshire village called Much Wenlock today and stumbled across a used book shop that had a load of used vinyl tucked in the back. I snagged a perfect, first pressing of GUP for £15. It looks brand new and unplayed - lovely. I used to own it on cassette back in the day and CD since, but this is the first time I've had it on vinyl.

I snagged a perfect, first pressing of GUP for £15. It looks brand new and unplayed - lovely. I used to own it on cassette back in the day and CD since, but this is the first time I've had it on vinyl.
My mate's a vinyl nut and was there a couple of weeks ago. I wonder if he found it too? He'll be upset if not. I'll possibly not mention it ;D

Riverside - Wasteland I normally just run a knife down the edge of the plastic sleeve when opening LPs, but somehow I managed to cut the end of my thumb - which I didn't notice until I saw blood all over the LP. Luckily as the plastic cover was still on only a bit of staining on the open edge. I have a habit of cutting myself when using knives; I even fainted once chopping an onion lol - my wife tries to keep them from me. :'(

True, More groove space equals more bass :-) I like it and some audiophile releases do it. I have some Mastodon 2LPs on 45rpm, first presses they did. And they sound a lot better. (they were also more expensive).
I see with the increase in vinyl interest more mainstream releases get the 45rpm treatment as well.

I just don't mlike the look and feel of the format. It is too small, it feels cheap and plastic. But I do get that you get more for your money.
It's matter of taste I suppose.

It took a while before MoV found their bearings - early pressings where hit and miss and the quality of the artowk subpar. But as of lately, say the last 10 years or so they have improved tremendously. Dead silent vinyl and great mastering, often limited pressings and doing the not so obvious albums as re-issues.
Really like Song for America as well - excellent choice.

The 40th ann. Number of the Beast. Bit pricey but I just had to have it. I was 11 when I pressed my nose against the shop window in our little town and was mesmerized by the cover. I had a fair collection of Kiss albums but this looked fierce. I ran home, plundered the piggy bank and went back to buy it. I will never forget hearing the spoken intro to tNotB - the labels were not telling me which side was which, so I started with side 2. I was blown away by everything: the music, the sound (oh my!), the intensity. I fell in love with the album right then and there, first play. Til date still my favourite Maiden album.
So yes, the 40th ann. needed to be in my collection. Funny thing is though, I always liked Gangland and it feels weird to have Total Eclipse replacing it, Gangland not even being on the album at all!

It is the 3LP indeed, with the 2LP Beast over Hammersmith being LP2 and 3.
For me it was Beast, then a couple of 12" singles that were around such as Women in Uniform, Maiden Japan(!!) and Run to the Hills "super sound version". That one had Total Eclipse as B side so I knew the track of course. Maiden were good at that early on, B sides and live tracks.
The followed the S/T and Killers which took some getting used to due to the Di'Anno vocals but I quickly relented being such fantastic albums. Killers side A is a work of genius, absolutely brilliant.
You know, I always really liked the first 2 Iron Maiden and prefer Paul Di'Anno's vocals to Bruce's. And yes, Killers Side A is off the scale. The first 2 albums are so raw :)
I had a couple of pounds left on an iTunes voucher and downloaded the B side Burning Ambition. I've always loved that song.
Arrived back from a Weekend away to find that Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast/Beast over Hammersmith and Candlemass's Sweet Evil Sun has landed.
Kiss - Creatures of the night. Half speed master 40th ann whatever, I needed a new copy my (indeed 40 years) old copy is worn out. Nice tip on jacket and actually a decent mastering & pressing job. Oh and the eyes on the sleeve glow in the dark 8)

But not to death, because it plays absolutely fanatstic. I eman, I don't think I could get similarly excited when I buy a FLAC file to be honest...
Also: Vandenberg, our Dutch heroes, Alibi. Again, a foreign pressing, Mexican this time, and that for a Dutch band...plays fantastic as well.
And, The Cure - Seventeen Seconds, canadian pressing. Don't ask me why all these exotic pressing came to me, the shop must had an international seller pass by and ditching her or his LPs. My gain though, this one also plays fantastic. Even A Forest doesn't sound too beaten up :-)

the LPs I bought were from 1963 and 1980 but I considered Seventeen Seconds to be a 'modern' record.. It's 43 years old. And it only is 17 years apart from the Monk LP.
Since I had that realization this afternoon I feel ancient. Born aeons ago.

Been a while since i've posted due to external family factors taking over my life....the usual stuff that happens to relatives as you get older (mobility issues, dementia, serious time limiting illness & death).
With regards my records they have all gone, a Polish guy I work with took nearly everything off of me except for 2 Metallica LPs, a Faith No More 12" and a Motley Crue 7".
In the past 2 weeks I sold all my Yes LPs/12"s & 7"s but have an excellent 1st pressing of The Yes Album listed right now with the Plum/Orange label which didn't sell first time around.

Received the fanclub Riverside boxset, has a shirt, 2LP clear vinyl and all sorts of stuff. Nice.
Also the new Dewolff LP in a boxset, it is a solid album. Very retro, very good.

Not really - I now have the last 3 albums on vinyl. I'll keep a look out for the earlier ones, but their remastered debut is quite cheap - the rest are a lot. Re LFatTM, the only one for sale on ebay is £150 from Poland and at Discogs it's $80 from Ukraine for the lowest priced. Oh yeah just realised I do want to get Lost 'n' Found - Live in Tilburg.

Yeah, goes to show you should be there early. I managed to buy 1 box from the fanclub half a year ago with the first 3 LPs, some live stuff and other goodies. Was not cheap but...there is now 1 for sale on Discogs for 850 :o Funny thing is it states 'sealed', the thing was never sealed. I have a very strong love/hate relationship with Discogs sellers these days because of things like this.
The only normal LP I am missing is ADHD, I'll wait for a repress I think..

Immanuel Wilkins - the 7th Hand, marvelleous and sprawling jazz album. Lots of percussionwork, lively jumping up and down rhythmic playing and free jazz improvs. Also moments of near silence to take a breath just before kicking into a 27 minute freejazz jam as album closer.
Kiss - the Elder. Yes, again. I have the original '81 cut, the CD and the remastered CD, but this is a new half speed master on vinyl, from Germany on clear vinyl with the track listing as it was originally intended. And rejected by the label because 'no single as opener'. Need to listen to this tomorrow to hear how it sounds. Has a very nice embossed cover as well and some goodies like photos and (believe it or not) a lyric sheet translated in German...

A really nice job lot of Rush albums that I only ever had either cassette or CD back in the day. These are all from the first year of release, possibly even first UK press after a quick check on Discogs. Whoever bought these originally must have stashed them away not played, because each one (the sleeve, inner and vinyl) are pristine, like brand new, without a mark or blemish anywhere. So:

John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy - evenings at the Village Gate. One of those latter day discoveries, unearthed tapes. This one has a great story:
The Gate had a state-of-the-art sound system, installed by an ambitious young engineer named Richard Alderson. One night during Coltrane's run, Alderson decided to test the system by capturing the band, using a single RCA ribbon microphone suspended above the stage, with a line running to a reel-to-reel tape recorder. The tapes were never intended for public consumption, and unauthorized in any case, so Alderson set them aside. They found their way to a collection at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, where they were recently rediscovered by a Bob Dylan archivist

And then more jazz..Wayne Shorter, Art Blakey, Eric Dolphy, that kind of stuff. There's this store in my birthtown (Delft) that I visit a couple of times a year. The owner is well over 70 and is a vinyl nut. He sells a lot of jazz, uesed & new, but also all other sorts of music. He used to import from the US himself giving him a notch over all the others for having exclusive LPs. And he loves mono recordings. He HAD to play me Mingus (x5) in mono he just found. Waits until his (large!) store is empty, because it needs to be played loud :-) Lovely man, I always leave with more than I intended... today it was the Wayne Shorter Tone Poet 'The all seeing eye', John Coltrane's ...More Lasting than Bronze (a 2LP with Trane's debut "Coltrane" and "Lush Life") and an Eric Dolphy, one of the live in Europe ones.
All in all a nice catch.
Earlier this week I received a pre-order: Donald Byrd's Electric Byrd, re-issue on Third Man (Jack White's label) in cooperation with Blue Note. Fantastic stuff.
Purchased a used (old!) Pioneer amp (SA500 a) with some KEF speakers (Calinda SP 1053) from the '70s to match a record player I had lying around. Why? Because I felt the need to play mono records properly, so purchased a mono cartridge ;D
And yes, that IS a big difference to playing those mono LPs on a stereo cartridge and stereo amp.
So I now have a dedicated mono setup.. Took some work to get it going properly though, but of cleaning and swearing was involved. One of those 2 things I don't mind.
Anyway, now on the hunt for nice copies of mono music I want to hear.
I have some of course, mostly jazz, but would like a decent Sgt. Peppers in mono. Although I need to sell a kidney for a NM copy it seems. Can't figure out for the life of it why they don't keep these things in print. There is a huge demand...only the vultures profit this way, not even the artist. (same for Stones, Floyd etc.). Weird.
Anyway, first order of business: source a decent copy of Peggy Lee's Black Coffee.

I bought the Beatles in mono vinyl box for £249.00 in 2016. They go for ridiculous amounts now - a very very high quality set..

Picked up some new LPs today. Bit of a funny thing actually.
Miles Davis Round About Midnight in mono, Peggy Lee's Black Coffee, a lovely re-issue from 2021, another Miles one: Walkin' and Duke Ellington meet Coleman Hawkins. Now, I set out to go & get the Duke Ellington & John Coltrane album and was completely convinced I had that in my hand. But when I came home and looked, I had the Coleman Hawkins one. You live and learn.
But hey,no hard feelings, it is a gorgeous album!

Green Lung - This Heathen Land (On green vinyl, obvs.)
The Pineapple Thief - Dissolution new from ebay for £12 and it turns up to be on white vinyl, which was a nice, unexpected surprise.
Waiting on the arrival of Bill Evans Sunday at the Village Vanguard. 1961 concert with the Trio. Well known of course, but looking forward to a newly mastered from the original tapes vinyl copy hot off the press.
I need to shut the world out this weekend for an hour and play this, just for me.Maybe it'll wash a little bit of the filth in the world away. Just for a moment.

Went to a record fair at Wantage Leisure Centre today. Very little of interest but I did pick up quite a nice copy of the live Genesis album, Seconds Out, for £13.
Had a great chat to a seller about attending gigs back in the late '70s/early '80s. He was a big Rush fan too and was going to the Geddy show at Portsmouth.

MOV is known for their fantastic pressings these days. Didn't start out like that, but they have learned a lot. They are also very open about their sources, email them and they will respond.

Joel Ross - Parable of the Poet and the recently released Nublues, which is a fantastic album. Ross plays the vibraphone and has delivered a lovely album in the spirit of Coltrane's bluesy music. There are even 2 of Trane's compositions on this album, Equinox and Central Park West and Monks' Evidence also gets the bluesy soulful treatment this albums breathes. It's an easy listen, not a very post bop busy type of album, but a very well played (alt saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins does his thing, and he does it so good) but really the whole band is fantastic.
If you like a bit of contemporary jazz, but not too modern, give this a try. Nublues, it will not disappoint.

Alice Coltrane - The Carnegie Hall Concert Another lovely archive release recorded well over 50 years ago. I read some people's opinions, I shouldn't have. "It's not perfect!", "there's tape dropouts!", yeah well 50 years of a tape being stored somewhere will do that. I really love these kind of recordings, it sounds real. Not doctored, not 'brought into the modern age'. The first half of the concert is as hypnotic as you'd expect it would be, the second half slowly moves toward chaotic improv, also exactly as you'd want it to be. I for one, am glad I spent money on this and I'll gladly let the naysayers stream all they want.

I bought two new LPs from HMV that landed this weekend.
John Mellencamp - Strictly A One-Eyed Jack
Talk Talk - Spirit Of Eden.
Both are good pressings but I'm particularly impressed with Spirit Of Eden. This record is full of near silent passages and I had little hope that it would work on LP but it's wonderful! On the Parlophone label on heavy vinyl, they've done a sterling job with this. The lack of surface noise is mindblowing. It comes with a DVD Audio disc of the album too and was a very reasonable £21.99.
The Mellencamp LP was discounted from £29.99 to £17.99 so great value too

That Talk Talk is great, I have it as well. Same goes for the Laughing Stock pressing. We'll worth seeking out especially because the initial press was very low key and really needed the volume turned up.
The Mark Hollis solo is a bit hit and miss, depending on where it was pressed.

Picked up some nice releases, Sonny Rollins live in Europe 4LP box, 2 x Cannonball Adderley double live LPs, Yusuf Lateef 2LP live, Jeff Buckley's Songs to No One, Golden Earring 2LP Cut Sessions, Acid King's Middle of Nowhere, Centre of Everywhere, and because I ws there the new Shabaka Hutchings Album. Received an EP Acoustic by Within Temptation as RSD 'gift'. That's me sorted.
The wait was even nice, the weather was not. I ran into the exact same guy I talked to last year while waiting in line, yes we are idiots like that we concluded. I overheard the first ones in line were there at 4:15!
Anyway, getting an early start is nice, now have some listening to do.
