Title: Moving pictures 40th
Post by: Nick on April 15, 2022, 07:56:06 PM
Really enjoying the YYZ bonus concert, mixed by Terry Brown as well. All one night rather than selected edits.

Yes, it contains the album ESL should've been.

What was Geddy referring to when he said something like "keeping the Mediterranean theme" when moving from Red Barchetta to Closer to the Heart. Red Barchetta is Italian but what has Closer got to do with that part of the World?

No, it was added in for ESL tour. It followed Beneath, Between, Behind. Apart from that one change, the set list was the same so that would've been the one us UK fans experienced (source: Rush Tribute - Merely Players by Robert Telleria)
I have to say, I cannot remember the drum solo being so early in the set

I think they played it on the ESL Tour, there was such a thing being the road warriors that they were back then 😀

It was the second time I caught them live, at Bingley Hall once again, in October '81...the first live performance of said classic 😎

Second thoughts, I think I may have been there for the third Bingley Hall date on November 9th (it was definitely the boiler suit night)

Looking at the timeline around these tours, I'm wondering whether ESL's audio issues were a result of it being, ahem, rush-released. Recorded in March, released in October. The band were touring until early July. I'm sure they took a well-deserved break before diving into the tapes and fixing things up. Those European dates were probably fixed well in advance of ESL's release, conception even. I'm sure Mr Daniels would not have missed the chance to have another LP in the stores for the next leg of the tour. They were burning as hot as they ever would at that point. The live version of Tom Sawyer made TOTPs........without Pan's People this time!
Having said that, the theory contradicts the band's view of the record. They said that after the 'raw' sound of ATWAS, they wanted something a little more polished but admit they went too far with ESL. What I like about the Live YYZ recording is the perfect blend of advancing sophistication (and the added electronic instrumentation) and the retained essence of hard rock. Something that was lost in the mix on ESL IMHO

Definitely played. It was as shocking as the boiler suit when first witnessed. Clearly written on a keyboard. What were they playing at?  ;D

That's a brilliant version of CTTH, in my opinion. Far better played 'straight' without the addition of that awful reggae ending. However, I do think the reggae intro to Working Man works really well. The 'crunch' as they segue into the regular version is awesome - great stuff!

Pete Pardo not sure about his opinions. and the box set is overkill.

I have the original CD and that is all I need. Sounds brilliant through my Naim.

Bought the vinyl set, not the ultra-over-the-top one, but the 'regular' 5LP set. I was on the fence but after hearing some pf the show included I decided to go for it. I cannot imagine they will do an beter Exit Stage Left than this one...it sounds fantastic. Somewhat of a definitive version.

No, ESL is best left alone after this. If this show had been used the question would be what would get culled for a double LP? Perhaps the bigger question though would be, why weren't these recordings used? I wonder if the stellar audio quality is purely down to modern technology when it came to mixing/production  :-\

May very well be that they did not consider these recodings to be good enough at the time. Remember this is all considered 'bonus' now, but at the time the record company had a big say in all of this, what to use and what not. But I agree this sounds stellar to these ears. I have many live LPs sounding a lot worse than these recs. I wonder whether these come from 24 track tapes? The ESL shows were taped purposely with a mobile studio of course.

Would like to just buy the atmos blu ray but that doesn't look possible and I doubt you can get it on the streamers as a full album, I see Apple has TS available.

ATWAS was recorded with a mobile studio, the "Fedco Mobile Unit". ESL sounds so much worse. Why? Recording technology was making leaps and bounds at that time and they must have had more money to spend on it.

I haven't purchased any of the actual physical items, but the "Super Deluxe" version is available to stream through my Amazon music subscription, so I had a first listen yesterday.

I'm not going to comment on the remastered album itself. but the live show is a gem. I've only listened to it once, but I was filled with Rush love and awe again. A feeling I haven't had in quite a while really.

Cracking cheese Grommet, and a great 'historical document'.

ESL is like the gig was recorded from the bar outside, save for side 2, the UK 1980 recordings. It suffered that 'enormo dome' thing the same as 'Live Evil' by Sabbath. This 1981 Toronto recording, warts and all, is a far better record of what they sounded like. Tempo blips, bum notes etc..... I like it all the more because of it....

Right...right...forgive me as for various reasons (none too bad) I have fallen out of the loop about Rush releases.

Hence my question is: what's the cheapest option for buying a physical copy of this fabled what-should-have-been-ESL release?  Because it sounds extraordinary. 🙂

It is a bit hard to get hold of at the moment It has been sold out at Amazon & Burning Shed for the last week. I think they under estimated demand (not realising how popular a decent live recording would be). I picked up a CD copy in Fopp yesterday for £17

No - ESL is one which, in my personal opinion, you should not bother with. The one that's causing the excitement is the live CD that's been bundled with the 40th Anniversary release of Moving Pictures.

Amazon have it here:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Moving-Pictures-Rush/dp/B09SGYNMTL/

Other outlets may have it a bit cheaper (but not much I suspect).

I'm bridling a bit at the prospect of paying £20+ for an old live recording, I must say. Will wait until I can get it cheaper somehow.

These unending rereleases and special editions feel a bit unedifying.

i am slumming it for now on Spotify, as most of my music listening is done while cycling/cycle training with ear buds/pods, so I can live with any slight loss of audio quality for now

but even so, its just ace

I'm happy having it available in CD quality on Qobuz. I don't feel compelled to own a physical copy. Perhaps it would be nice on vinyl but a full show is just not suited to that format. With the ability to stream CD seems redundant to me.
