I quite like VT and agree about Secret Touch live - it's brilliant.

Anyway today:

Some Dutch prog from Finch - Beyond Expression

My journey through the Stones' studio album catalogue brought me to Some Girls yesterday.

Interesting one. Unlike the previous couple of albums it's pretty much the five members of the band, no added keyboards or other guest musicians. It's also produced by Mick and Keith and it feels really basic - almost like a set of soundcheck recordings. Some might see a certain authenticity and charm in the stripped-down, plug in and go ethos, but to me - it just feels underproduced and lazy. Probably because it is.

There are a couple of good tunes on here - hard not to like Miss You or Beast of Burden but if the record purchaser of 1978 was hoping to hear something as sharp and powerful as Gimme Shelter, Sympathy for the Devil or Heartbreaker, they'd have been disappointed.

I did quite enjoy hearing the C&W pastiche Far Away Eyes. It was the b side of Miss You and used to get a run out on the jukebox in the basement bar I frequented when I was a surly teenager. I don't think I'd heard it since then.

Bit of Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, live album they released. Sampling to see if I like it enough to buy it. Do love the ol' Uncle & his mates.

UFO - Werewolves of London. The re-formed SITN line up ((Simon Wright on drums) after recording Walk On Water playing in Wolverhampton.
It's good, all the classics plus a couple of new tunes but I'm not convinced that Schenker was anywhere near his best. He appears to be re-imagining a lot of the solos and I think they are all poorer for it. Who knows how well he was at the time though.
More raw than the classic live record as it's straight off the soundboard. Even though it's not peak UFO, would've been a thrill to have seen them on this tour. Definitely worth a listen if you're a fan

So...today was a day of extremeties.
I listened to Georges Avanitas Quintet - live in Paris 1961, Ronnell Bright Trio - S/T, Lee Morgan's the Cooker (all in mono  ;D ), then for something completely different: Urfaust - Untergang, followed by Sonny Rolins' Saxophone Colossus and now Ginger Wildhearts' Love in Times of Cholera.
