I've always enjoyed it - for the annual thread that gives it a good roasting.

Quote from: The Picnic Wasp on June 20, 2023, 05:18:25 PMSome of my neighbours hate me because I feed the local foxes in my garden every night. Beautiful creatures. I've had frequent arguments about them having every right to live here as the suburb I live in gradually reaches further into the greenbelt, destroying their natural habitat. I'm pleased in a way as it just underlines for me the folk that I don't really wish to associate with in life.
I woke up at half four this morning, got up, looked out of the curtains ans saw two foxes gambolling in the field behind our house.
If any of these vulpine vermin bring about the demise of any of the pheasants which come and eat from our hands then they're getting twatted with my Baseball Bat >:(

You'd have a better chance of twatting the pheasants. Doubt you'd get near the foxes. Anyway, I thought you were into fine dining. Nice bit of pheasant. Lovely! 😁

They just need a bit of extra weight on them. Bloody ducks and pigeons tuck into the seed too...

I like foxes, but they can certainly be a pest.

If you asked me to list my top ten pests, they'd mostly be humans.

Terrible news topics this week. So much sadness and senseless bloodshed and cruelty. The world is quite sick.

'Twas always thus, but nowadays these things are the exception and not the rule.  We're actually living in the least feudal and most progressive era in human history; the bad stuff may seem overwhelming, but that's only because reports of it can be communicated and accessed so instantaneously - often as events are actually happening, of course.

As an antidote, have a read of Steven Pinker's The Better Angels Of Our Nature - or at least a summary of it (the book is over 800 pages long).

Yes, I suppose that's correct. The internet would have been interesting in Roman times. YouTube clips from the Colosseum would have been a difficult watch for those of a sensitive nature. I wonder what percentage of the population were sensitive then. Maybe children were exposed to barbaric goings on from an early age and just grew up hard.

Bloody train to Manchester cancelled.  Been up since 5am.  Was hoping for a kip before Peter Gabriel, but no chance of that now.

Tennis. Well we near that time of year were we in the UK take an interest in tennis again (despite being played all year round). As a sport I quite like it and played a bit when younger, but everything around it is horrible for me. First we the have 'fans', who sit on Henman Hill or Murray Mound shouting for our mainly useless UK players. And watching Queens earlier I worked out there are 11 (yep 11) officials for one tennis game and 6 ball boys/girls. So that's 17 people for one game, I can't think of any other sport that has such an amount of people necessary to play. And now those ball boys/girls have to get the players drinks, hand towels out during play and stand with umbrellas over the players during breaks - wtf. And breaks, why a break after only 2 games - any break should be after a set. Again, I can't think of another sport that stops so frequently. At least we only have to put up with it for only 2 weeks a year.

You make an extremely good point. Tennis is extremely 'expensive' in terms of significant others that are required in order to play the game with the least possible chance of disputes, notwithstanding those that are present to 'pamper' the competitors.
I view rugby as similarly disadvantaged. I also smile when I see a crowd of American youths 'playing' football (US-style). Basketball is also hugely popular in the US but can't be played without a court.
I don't think it is chance that football (ROTW-style) is probably the most widely-played team sport across the globe. Four jumpers, a ball, an open space and as many competitors as you like and you have a game that is easy to play without 'extras'.

Never much cared for Will Self's opinion on anything, but always respected him tremendously as a writer. But he's written this poorly.

Had a missed delivery from APC today.  >:(

Have I buggery. Delivery time was from 13:39-15:39, this kept getting pushed back. I was monitoring parcel tracking all afternoon - got nothing better to do - and it had got to five stops from me. Next minute I was the next stop. Next minute text comes through saying they had tried to deliver and I wasn't in. Had they buggery. Proof of non-delivery appeared to be a seat in a van.

Rang APC up, I was the second caller complaining of the same thing from the same van. He must have been at the end of his hours they said, but he shouldn't be doing what he did. No, the cunt shouldn't.
