Title: I've Never Seen Star Wars
Post by: pxr5 on March 30, 2022, 12:49:33 PM
Well I have actually seen Star Wars, but I'm using the title of the Radio/TV show which invited guests to come up with list of common things not done and try them out. Inspired by Matt2112's admission of never having seen Aliens, what well know movies or TV shows have you not seen.

Off the top of my head 3 movies I've not watched (and probably never will) are:

Four Weddings and a Funeral
Love Actually
Titanic

Luckily my wife hates 'chick flicks' and 'rom coms' and prefers Sci-Fi and horror like me  ;D

never seen

an episode of Coronation street.

Films never seen
Titanic
The Body Guard
Die Hard
Transformers
Fast and Furious

Never heard a Smiths, U2, Michael Jackson or Oasis album

Which to never hear again is Pink Floyd and Radiohead, mind inducing- brain numbing boring and annoying. I will put my tin hat on.

There are some enormously well regarded films that I haven't seen . . . these 3 spring to mind.

The Godfather (any of 'em)
Gone With The Wind
Citizen Kane

I have seen Die Hard oodles of times though Rufus. Terrific fun and YES, it is a Christmas movie, despite what Bruce Willis might say. What does he know?

Citizen Kane is excellent but I feel it over rated, no never seen Gone with wind either, the Godfathers are ok but also not worth the hype. I bought a box set of Hitchcock movies and even the lesser movies are brilliant.

Despite being a teenager with a keen interest in sci-fi when Star Wars came out, I never saw it until about 13 years ago. When I did, I couldn't really understand why they ever bothered with a sequel. I haven't seen any of the others.

So I have seen Star Wars.

I haven't seen The Shawshank Redemption yet.

I did see Titanic, or at least an abridged version. Only because it was showing on a flight to New York that I was on in the late '90s. I've seen Love Actually at least three times! It's quite a fun film.

I haven't seen The Godfather or The Exorcist yet. I must get round to both of those. I've seen so many clips from The Godfather on YouTube actually that I must have seen about half of it. Was watching one only today.

I haven't seen Citizen Kane or Metropolis.

Citizen Cain is coming up a bit, I haven't seen that either - I may actually watch that one sometime though.

A movie I never had any intention of watching was Forrest Gump. However my wife, son and I were on holiday in Cyprus in a house we'd rented and the owner had left 2 DVDs. One was Forrest Gump so we watched it and all really enjoyed it too.

I've seen the original canonical Star Wars films. I've seen the Indiana Jones films. I've seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I will always watch Home Alone when it's on. I've seen the Spongebob Squarepants Movie.

As for anything serious, no.

Both Mad Max and Mad Max 2 are worth watching although entirely different in style due to the sequel having an awful lot  more money spent on it.
By the time Mad Max 3 (Beyond the Thunderdome)came around, they'd jumped the shark

That's quite a typical pattern - first film a classic, second a big-budget blockbuster, third (and any subsequent efforts) a disappointment. See also: Terminator, Alien.

I hear that the one from a few years back with Tom Hardy is pretty good, though.

Please, please watch Citizen Kane; I got round to it only last year and it really is a masterpiece that's way ahead of its time in almost every respect.

Orson Welles had pretty much carte blance to make the film he wanted and that creative freedom shines through.

I'll follow up with my list - I've a feeling it could be fairly long. :-\

That is really kind and really appreciated - I think I already have it...I've got the second one as well.  I know that I'll just never ever get around to watching it.  I have very little 'me' time...by the time the kids get to bed, I'm totally finished...

I do plan to watch Citizen Kane though at some point after your recommendation.

I've seen all the Spag Westerns I think, certainly all the Eastwood ones. But there are a few classic Westerns I haven't seen yet, including The Outlaw Josie Wales and Once Upon A Time In The West.

Just checked and Once Upon A Time is actually a Spag Western so I haven't seen all of them.

Matt, I think you'd like Dog Day Afternoon a lot. Pacino is brilliant - properly scenery chewingly (in a good way) brilliant. Although I've always thought Dustin Hoffman would have been perfect in that role.

Speaking of whom, anyone not seen The Graduate? I've seen it about five times. Or Marathon Man?

Yo're in for a treat with The outlaw josey wales. Have you seen Pale Rider? which is sort of a remake of Shane, its a lovely film. Another great western is Cold Mountain, people are critical of it but I really enjoyed it. I must watch Once upon a time in the west.

In fact, could be a huge list. I imagine if i went through the list of Oscar winning Best Films I reckon a good 50% would yet to be watched

Longest Day is a good one but special effects in war movies have come a long way since then, so it probably looks a bit dated now. I haven't seen it since the '70s though I watched some of the colourised version on TV when it was shown, out of curiosity.

There are two versions, one with the Germans speaking their own language with subtitles and one where they speak English with German accents.

The Battle Of Britain is another must-watch. Perhaps we should have a classic war film thread.

The joke is that the detective's wife has been on an exotic cooking course and the food she prepares for meals with her husband is vile. Is it a metaphor? Interesting thought, I didn't pick up on that if it is.

Frenzy....

Found it. My wife and I watched a lot of the Hitchcock films and we always had very long discussions about them. Below is from a post she put up on someone film blog.

I watched Frenzy for the first time last night and it came to me afterwards that a sub theme in it is that if you don't feed a man's appetite he will feed it himself, in secret, and at a greater extreme.
The Police Inspector eats his full English breakfast at work and mentions wanting it three times a day. He wants plain food which is not being supplied to him because his wife feeds him bizarre evening meals which, with barely a vegetable in sight, are not nourishing either. His wife knows what he wants (a steak and baked potato) but is not willing to give him it, so he goes elsewhere to be satisfied..
The murderer goes to Agencies looking to be match with a masochistic woman, and not being supplied such, rapes and murders.
The role of food in the film is also interesting.
The murderer eats crisp fresh apples (Adam and Eve?)..
After the body in the Thames, the Police Inspector is fed a disgusting brown fish soup that looks like Thames water with horrors in it..
After the murder of the now single ex wife, he is fed a lone and dried up looking small bird on his plate.
After the last murder wherein the body is put among potatoes to return to the farm, he is fed pigs trotters, clearly from a farm.
Dark and clever stuff!

Not a film I've never seen because I did watch it as a teenager, one quiet afternoon at the Odeon Cinema in Hartlepool in the mid '70s but I've been meaning to watch it again for many years - Rollerball.

Very interesting dystopian feel and I remember a scene with a futuristic computer room that was very much of its time, with that early mystique of the computer as something to be feared.

There are two versions of The Man Who Knew Too Much, Hitchcock made the original in 1934 and remade it in '56.

Years ago when I reluctantly returned to the East Midlands from London I developed a mild obsession with finding old London film locations. I think I must have seen the film on TV because I bought the DVD. Just found some captures from it on my hard drive, I'd forgotten about these:

As you can see I did this in August 2002. Here's one of the captures:

I was convinced that this was Camden Town. I actually went down there to look for some of the locations in the film, I did find some of them but this particular street was demolished many years ago.

Google Street View would have made life a lot easier. But it wasn't available then.

I did find quite a few locations from other old films and TV series though. Some of them were easy of course, like this one from the old Gerry Anderson sci-fi series UFO. Covent Garden, filmed here in 1970 and photographed by myself in 2002:
