General Discussion / Re: Use of Sweary Language
November 10, 2022, 11:44:23 AM
Quote from: The Picnic Wasp on November 10, 2022, 11:16:10 AMIt's all about context I suppose. A sprinkling of earthy language to achieve a desired effect can be useful, but I've been on sites where it's overuse looks very ugly. It's why I'm a big fan of Peter Kay. He's no shrinking violet but he doesn't rely on coarse language to be funny. I can't bear to watch anything with Gordon Ramsay in it. That's the kind of swearing I find offensive, just littering sentences with words which don't convey any kind of emphasis or meaning. There is one site I've been on where they insist on using substitute words such as carrot for Fishy's favourite 😁 but it's a bit pointless when your mind is receiving the message carried anyway. I think on TNMS we used to rearrange swear words, or drop in a symbol instead of a crucial letter, but I think that kind of self policing was mainly due to the fact that the visitors in general were a fairly decent bunch who didn't see the necessity for dragging the place to the gutter. My shorter post should really have been, no, I'm not easily offended and if folk wish to drop a few nuclear devices go ahead, but better to do so if it adds to rather than detracts from the message. Over and f***ing out!🤬🤬🤬

When I was moderating on TNMS I used to be quite, err, anal about the use of swear words, that James Gibbon bloke was the biggest culprit  ;) My argument was that the main board was free for all to see and we certainly had some quite young members at the time who, I felt, shouldn't be exposed to that sort of language. Hilarious really, in hindsight, as the younger generation seem to use it all the time. That, and all the other Mods would just take the piss out of Uncle Pudders lol!

No objection from me then!

Quote from: Slim on November 05, 2022, 11:12:04 AMMy 2CD copy of the Giles Martin Revolver remix arrived yesterday.

Some Beatles fans are actually angry about Giles having the temerity to remix one of the all-time classic records in the history of recorded music. I think that's silly, personally. For one thing, copies of the original stereo mix - and indeed the mono mix - are still readily available.

But more importantly the new mix completely respects the original recording. It doesn't detract from it in the slightest. Quite honestly I think it respects the original instrumental and vocal performances more faithfully than the '60s stereo presentation, which was a little bit gimmicky and used stereo as a novelty in some respects. And actually - until Abbey Road, the mono versions of these albums were considered the definitive presentation.

The new stereo mix made possible by the de-mixing sorcery is a tasteful and neutral presentation that provides a much more natural stereo soundstage than the original. It really sounds much better, especially on headphones where the stereo gimmicks of the '60s mix are positively grating.

Best of all, there's a clarity and presence in the new mix that's just not quite there on the old stereo version. I listened carefully to both incarnations of Eleanor Rigby - in the old version Paul's vocal is slightly distant, somehow slightly veiled - in the new one, it sounds like it was recorded in a state-of-the-art studio this morning. Every inflection comes across vividly.

The booklet, with an introduction by Paul is nice to have as well.

I hope the older Beatles albums will get this treatment. Have a listen to the stereo version of It Won't Be Long from With The Beatles for example, with John's voice coming out of the right speaker and the rhythm guitar in the left. It sounds ridiculous and I'd always prefer the mono version.

Perfectly put James. Respectful of the original recording but a far better sonic experience than the original stereo mix and, the cleaning up adds to the end result and doesn't sound jarring at all. I'm with you as far as the mono recordings of the early albums goes and used to have a mono LP of Revolver that hard times meant had to be sold off (yes, I'm an idiot!).

I think it was about the time that the Anthology discs came out that I found out that the mono recordings were completely separate studio sessions and therefore unique in their own right. It just hadn't occurred to me. I should really try to acquire those, but think the cd versions only available in a (pricey) box set?

Blimey! It must be 'woolie pullies' in the Pudney household. Brrrrrrr!

Haha! I've had to stop wearing shorts! Seriously though, not really felt cold in the house but do have the challenge of a half Maltese wife to deal with. Log burner will go on before the CH as well and. as you say, temperature falling next week.

Quote from: Slim on October 27, 2022, 10:44:48 AMAt the moment we have the central heating on only for an hour or so in the morning, although I use a fan heater intermittently in my study while I'm working. The weather's pretty mild at the moment, though.
We've all been lucky in that the temperature has been unseasonably warm. Our central heating has hardly come on over the last few days (stat set just over 20 degrees).
Due to change towards the middle of next month, I believe.

Ours is set to 18 - not come on at all so far. Obviously once temp drops to 18 in the house I'll knock another degree off ;)

I was mentioned in an article in The Independent, written by someone I had guided in France as, '...Neil Pudsey...' my moment of fame cruelly equated to a charity bear. The online article was changed (link below) but the print article remains! Mind you the sub-editor continued to cover himself in glory with that article by labelling a German War Graves Cemetery as a Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, also pointed out, but still not changed after 8 years.

Quote from: Slim on October 02, 2022, 01:48:01 PMMy first proper "album experience" - where you listen to the whole thing as a single artistic statement, an aural "journey" if you like - was Help! by The Beatles. I loved the pics on the back cover. My brother's copy didn't have the "Help Mini-Documentary (Insert into computer to view)" of course.

First LP I bought - from Boots of all places with a Christmas Gift Token. Probably about 1972 I'd guess when the Beatles films had been shown on TV... Still very much a favourite :)

Quote from: Slim on October 11, 2022, 05:01:25 PMCT scan at Glenfield hospital today. I had to wait six minutes in the little waiting room and it was all done in another five. Plus I didn't have to pay for the car park since I was back there in less than 30 minutes, and the traffic was light both ways.

Best of all though I thought they might give me a dose of contrast fluid first, and I have a morbid fear of injections. They didn't.

Hopefully I'll find out if I have a kidney stone in a few days. I think I probably don't.

Hope results are clear then James. I had a CT scan a while back when being diagnosed with Diverticulitis which involved an infusion which, they said, would make it feel like I'd pissed myself! Went through, nothing, thought well that's ok then, didn't feel a thing. Turned out to be a reference scan so went through again, with the infusion and, flippin' heck!  :o

Lou tested negative today which is quite impressive me thinks? Follows a faint line yesterday. Test in hospital on Saturday was really bold so just one of those things or a result of the infusion?

I'm still negative as well, though still plenty of time for that to change of course.

Thanks all, much appreciated. We should have been heading down to Fowey today to spend a few days with my sister but obviously have had to postpone (no Osprey photos this year then!). Ironically Lou was about to book her booster (hospital unimpressed she hadn't been notified earlier) but will now have to wait a bit I guess, looking at earlier posts in this thread.

As for me, feeling a bit meh, but no more meh than the many, many times I've tested before and been negative so, I'll have a another beer!

General Discussion / Re: COVID-19
October 08, 2022, 06:45:49 PM
Lou and I had avoided Covid so far (I still have at the point of typing) but Mrs P tested positive on Thursday evening. Interestingly that set off a chain of events! As she is considered at a higher risk, marginally, because of her MS, she had applied for a box of free tests, which came with a request to register the results.

Registered the positive result Friday morning, received an email a couple of hours later saying that she may be eligible for new treatments to reduce the effect of Covid. Phone call this morning from the Churchill Hospital in Oxford and a few hours later we are in the dialysis unit and she is having an infusion. As this was of Saline Solution I wondered at first if it was a placebo but apparently not.

Symptom wise it appears to be like a really nasty flu - she's quite poorly and completely zonked out but, stable, and no thoughts at all of admission or anything.

Sent home with a fingertip pulse oximeter to test herself over next 14 days.

Be interesting to see if this speeds up the recovery?

They're brilliant James, particularly intrigued by the second one and the units chosen to be on it. These were usually made by local women who then sold them to the men so, maybe these were the units that one particular location had seen pass through? Or might be units of a a Division?

Heading out for a few days on the battlefields on Saturday as it happens :)
