1914-15 Star

I may have found him...when I prioritised the search for James Gibbon, ASC (rather than other units or Gibbons/Gibbins) there was only one hit. Below is an image of this mans Medal Index Card. Note that he was originally in the RAMC, which would fit your memories of his service. Then a move to the ASC (RASC). This could have been the same field ambulance of course.

I'll stick a couple of other docs up that this card refers to, the Medal Rolls, one for the 1914-15 Star the other for the British War Medal/Victory Medal and you'll see a few more positive details there...

ASC men can be a right pain to research and trace and, with no service record surviving as far as I can see, it's hard to accurately track his whereabouts (but not impossible!).

Ah yes, of course, pretty much the same strength for a field ambulance as in WW2 when my father was in HQ Company. Lorries rather than horse drawn transport by then though! I'll have a closer look at military records - when I briefly scanned the records last night there were several James Gibbons (I took an educated punt on Jim's surname). I'll see if I can narrow it down a bit :)

My first thought was Devonshire Regt, but there is a possible clue in the badge on his right arm which, I think is a Divisional insignia. The only one I can find that matches is that is for the 42nd (East Lancashire) Infantry Division.

See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divisional_insignia_of_the_British_Army

Which then leads me to think it may be an Army Service Corps Badge, the ASC having units attached to that division. He's holding a riding crop as well, which would fit with transport duties etc?

Found this to illustrate the type of cap badge: https://www.brittonsbadges.co.uk/en-GB/wwi-cap-badges/army-service-corps-cap-badge/prod_12821#.Y5e86HanxPY

Not entirely sure though...what was his full name?

Cracking photo James - thrown by the fact your Grandfather's cap badge is not RAMC  ;)

Quote from: Slim on December 04, 2022, 12:02:34 PMGenesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

As a teenager, browsing through the record racks in Hartlepool town centre on a Saturday, I was always really impressed by the cover artwork. I wasn't a Genesis fan and I didn't get round to buying it for another 25 years or so.

Every now and then (about once every seven or eight years) I listen to it all the way through - out of a sense of duty really, because it's one of the classic prog records. But I've never really found it very convincing.

I'm unashamedly a massive (early) Genesis fan but struggle with The Lamb. The first album is pretty good in fairness but after that it wanders of into some weird alternative universe, for me!

Quote from: The Picnic Wasp on December 02, 2022, 05:17:41 PMIs Andy Scott the one who used to deliberately lip sync badly during Blockbuster on TOTP?

I don't know, if I get a chance I'll ask!

Kira Mac were great a couple of nights ago, (heavyish) bluesy rock, right up my strasse. Slightly unsure when found out lead singer was a former The Voice contestant but she certainly had 'a' voice and fronted the band superbly. And £12 to get in!

Next up for me is Sweet, next week at the O2 in Oxford. Just Andy Scott left from the original band and, for many, understandably, that makes them barely 'Sweet'. But, never seen them and had nothing else on so, why not?

Thought I'd just drop in with this one today. Used one of my usual start words, then a back up and still little joy. Was rescued by the fact that on the odd occasion I do the multi board games I use a third word to get more letters out and, with a hint from the previous guess, went with it and struck lucky ;)

Quote from: Blastzone on November 17, 2022, 11:34:54 AMWell worth the travel down to Wembley . Thoroughly enjoyable gig with great seats. Tremendous set list with , as Pudders said , Herd culling being the highlight from the latest album . Sorry I missed you by the way,  I believe I was in the same pub as you  but kept bumping into folk we knew . A quick trip down and back up with the Scottish troops , but we all enjoyed it very much

Sorry we missed you, it was impossible to get Lou's wheels in the pub so missed loads of you guys!

Crossed one off the list last night with Corky Laing, supported by Brave Rival. Gigs at the Bullingdon can be sparsely populated so it was good to see 50 or 60 in for the support who, it must be said exceeded my already high expectations. Definitely worth checking out if they are new to you.
These small venue gigs are great when they allow you to have a quick chat with someone like Corky, at the end of the night. What a nice bloke! The guy is 74 and still playing as good as ever. The set leaned heavily on early Mountain tracks but also included a few from his latest album and at least one West, Bruce and Laing cut. Great great fun!

Brave Rival - Life's Machine. Ahead of their (much anticipated by me) support slot tomorrow night for Corky Laing.
Corky Laing - Finnish Sessions. See above...
Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride. Again, see above!

Quote from: dom on November 14, 2022, 02:11:58 PMNice review of the Wembley gig

Pretty accurate I'd say though thought most of the new stuff sounded fine and Herd Culling was immense! Can imagine if they ever did tour properly again that would be the one they definitely keep...but great gig. Really good to bump into quite a few of the former TNMS crowd (see if I can remember user names: Oz, Rascal Houdi, Neill with 2 L's, Baldie Pete, Dixcot...) though missed as many as we saw, which was a shame. And I guess it's an age thing when you you get driven to the gig by your son (who then get's a nice seat upgrade courtesy of Neill).

It's a crap venue but, from Louise's point of view in her wheelchair it rather exceeded expectations with a great spot at the front of the lower tier and attentive/understanding staff. Plus, the PT sound man must be a miracle worker as it sounded pretty decent.

Meanwhile Louise is causing mayhem on the various fan pages due to her light up walking stick  :)

Quote from: Ali on November 10, 2022, 10:47:51 PMTo think the first time I eventually got to see him, in 2003 on the Growing Up Tour in Manchester, they were actually selling the tickets for half price 😵

To this day, it remains one of the finest arena shows I've ever witnessed 👌

Saw him on the Still Growing Up tour for free - they gave away production seats on the morning of the show to folk on the mailing list at the time!
