I was a bit obsessed with that thought for a wee while, to the point where I looked up the list of all the solutions there has already been. I just checked just now and the Scrabble dictionary lists 9,000 five letter words so I think the chances for any of us hitting that hole-in-one are limited (by our honesty!)😂

I haven't. Got it in two a few times. Closest I came was when one of my regular starting words was the solution, but of course I didn't use it that day.

Anyway .. today's was a bit tougher than usual. Took about twenty minutes.

That's the way Wordle should be and rarely is for me. A couple of letters to start including a green. Then either a first or last letter on the next. Bliss! Still took about four or five minutes with a bit of head scratching for the solution.

I'll have a stab at this. Let's frame this as the probability of misplacing three letters which are present in a string of five letters, four times.

For the 1st row: the probability of misplacing the E is 4/5. Ditto the other two. So the probability of misplacing all three is (4/5)^3.

For the 2nd row: the odds are 3/4 (ie there are four places the E could go, three of them are wrong). So for all three it's (3/4)^3.

For the 3rd row it's (2/3)^3

For the 4th, (1/2)^3

Therefore the probability of misplacing all three four times in a row is: (4/5)^3 * (3/4)^3 * (2/3)^3 * (1/2)^3

= 0.512 * 0.421875 * 0.29629629629  * 0.125

Exactly 0.008, or a bit less than 1%.

I worked this out using fractional arithmetic, to eliminate rounding error in the floating point maths.

So (4/5)^3 * (3/4)^3 * (2/3)^3 * (1/2)^3

is the same as

(4 * 4 * 4 * 3 * 3 * 3 * 2 * 2 * 2) / (5 * 5 * 5 * 4 * 4 * 4 * 3 * 3 * 3 * 2 * 2 * 2)

.. which comes to 13824 / 1728000

.. or 1/125

= 0.008
